The ecological reserve of Sian Ka’an is protected by the government of Mexico to preserve the diversity of flora and fauna of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
It is a fact that the visit of tourists to Cancun , Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and in general to the area known as Riviera Maya affect the flora and fauna of the jungle so this area promote the diversity of flora and fauna in a responsible manner .
The ecological reserve of Sian Ka’an with 528,000 hectares was declared by UNESCO as World Heritage since 1987 , tourism in the area is limited, the reserve contains about 800 varieties of plants, more than 100 mammals, 346 species of birds and 850 species of molluscs and fish.
The Sian Ka’an in Mayan word meaning “place where the sky is born “, off its coastline with white sandy beaches are situated in front of the coral reef second largest planet stretching from Mexico to Honduras .
The floor of the area is mainly of limestone, this prevents the formation of surface rivers so there are a large number of underground rivers known as ” cenotes “
Within the reserve found 23 areas with Mayan ruins , the most famous area is Tulum, the only archaeological site built right on the Caribbean Sea .
